I would say I had a middle of the road adolescent life on a scale of interesting. I think that growing up in diverse environments was a good thing for me.
I was born in a reasonably sized city - Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a population of about 100,000. I lived there through the 3rd grade and then moved to live on a farm near Marshall, Michigan - a city of about 6,000 people.
I enjoyed living on a farm. I think the fact that is was a fairly large farm of over 2000 acres and had a large poultry operation helped. However, living on a farm is a lot of hard work in a gamble that you will receive rewards that mostly aren't materially very high. I very much appreciate the benefits found in a city over those of living in the country.
Like many people, my parents divorced when I was growing up. The bottom line is that the term 'broken home' is very appropriate. Luckily, my stepfather did a pretty good job which helped out quite a lot in dealing with the whole situation.
What else do I have to say about growing up? I did pretty well in school once I was in the accelerated learning classes in High School. I admit that I was also in band (playing the saxophone).
I guess I am pretty happy that those years are behind me. I don't think the situation I was in suited me a whole lot.
Work HistoryI have worked pretty much all of my life. That is what life is like growing up on a farm. I would say that good work ethic is probably one of the best lessons learned from growing up on a farm.
In my senior year of high school our farm had gotten rid of its poultry operations so I entered a vocational program where I worked in a metallurgical lab in a local auto plant. I enjoyed working there and it was a great learning experience.
When I got out of high school I had two opportunities lined up. One was a collection of grants and scholarships I could use to go to college. The other opportunity was a computer position in the U.S. Navy.
I chose to enlist in the Navy because I thought it would be a great adventure and I had just had enough of school for awhile. The job I had secured, one in classified telecommunications work, was actually very interesting and perfectly suited for me. I also really enjoyed the travel.
I worked in the U.S. Navy for eight years as a Cryptologist Technician, 1988-1996. I went all over the world: Florida, Guam, Korea, and Washington D.C. I helped provide tactical communications networks for U.S. and allied ships during Operation Desert Storm as well as work at the Office of Naval Intelligence dealing with projects like the Predator unmanned spy aircraft.
In many ways I wish I would have left the U.S. Navy after my first four year enlistment. I probably could have become pretty rich during the early years of the 90's in the booming Internet job market.
Well, I did reap some of the benefits in the late 90's when I joined a company called ANS Communications. The company was such a great organization that I could only hope one day to work for such a place again. Unfortunately, AOL sold the company to Worldcom. Today, I am a senior network engineer for the former UUNET division of Worldcom.
I have determined that I will not stay in the telecommunications field as a technician. I have been a part of such grand operations in my technical career and I think everything else just pales in comparison. Working for Worldcom has pretty much soured my interest in working in any part of the telecommunications industry.
I would really like to work for a company that deals in space technology. I would really like to get involved in general or project management.
Formal EducationI currently have a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. I attended adult classes first at the University of Maryland and then later entered the University of Phoenix's online program. I can't say enough how good the UOP's online program is. I wouldn't have my degree today without the flexibility this program allowed me to have in obtaining my diploma. I can honestly tell you that the classes are on par with the University of Maryland on-campus night classes.
I attended college for over 10 years, from the second year I was in the Navy until 2001. It is a long road that a person has to travel to get their degree part-time. I don't think I would go back and change my decision not to go to college full-time but I sure am happy I finally got my degree.
I hope to go onto obtaining a Masters degree and possibly getting a second B.S. degree in biology with an emphasis in astrobiology.
Where I LiveCurrently I live in Ypsilanti, Michigan near Ford Lake in Ypsilanti Township. This is basically a suburb of Ann Arbor which is part of the greater Detroit Metropolitan area.
My house is just a cozy brick ranch. It has three normal sized bathrooms and a finished basement with a second bathroom and a gas fireplace. One of the better things about the house is a nice two car garage. Since I don't park my car in it very often I have a lot of room in it to work on woodworking projects.
My house is much more than I need for myself. My two cats seem to enjoy it though.
Personal InterestsI can write more than anyone can probably stand about my interests. I have more than just a few interests.
If I had to pick a main interest I would have to say it is foreign travel. Unfortunately, this is somewhat expensive so I don't get to do a whole lot of it. I think if I had someone to travel with I probably would go on more trips.
I am really captivated by computer technology. I am not a master programmer by far but I am a reasonably advanced computer user. I guess this makes me somewhat of a computer geek. I try to stay balanced with other interests to avoid turning to the geek-side though.
Of course, I like telecommunications. This is the field I have been in for the last 14 years and I have been very lucky to work in a field I am enthusiastic about.
I am a fairly big information junky. I really enjoy listening to NPR in the car and watching documentaries. I often read history books for enjoyment. However, I just went on a two week vacation where I didn't listen to the radio, read a newspaper, or watch TV and this was also enjoyable.
I enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy books on a regular basis for leisure. I think I have always been a big reader since I first started reading.
Hiking is a very liberating hobby that I enjoy less often than I would like to. I do get to go camping on a regular basis which is almost as good as hiking.
Over the last year I have become more involved in studying Medieval history. I have joined a group of other people interested in both studying and quasi-recreating Medieval life. The organization, the SCA, also has a martial arts-like figthting element which I have become involved in. This is has really helped me get in better shape and lose weight.
I can continue on with other interests I have like music, gaming (both ancient and computer), woodworking, webpage creation, space, management, etc. I think if you browse around my webpages you will get an understanding about these other interests of mine.
